Bergen New Bridge Medical Center Now Offering Injectable PrEP
Injectable PrEP is used to reduce the risk of HIV infection
Bergen New Bridge Medical Center announced it is now providing injectable PrEP medication (brand name Apretude) as an additional option for HIV prevention. The injection is given every two months and is highly effective in preventing HIV infection.
“Being able to offer this important HIV prevention medication at the Medical Center is an example of how we are addressing the health needs of the communities we serve,” said Deborah Visconi, President & CEO, Bergen New Bridge Medical Center.
Injectable PrEP is an option for most adults and adolescents who want to reduce their risk of HIV infection, regardless of sex assigned at birth, gender identity, or sexual orientation. A medical provider can help any client determine whether injectable PrEP is a medically appropriate option for them.
“It’s a great option for those who struggle with taking a daily pill, or who have privacy concerns related to using pills for PrEP,” said Dr. Christopher Awwad, Medical Director, LGBTQ+ Health & Wellness Center. “We are excited to add this service to our existing sexual health services, which include triple-site STI screening, vaccines for infections that can be transmitted sexually, and prescribing PrEP pills for either daily or on-demand dosing.”
After the initial injection, patients return for a second injection one month later. After that, injections occur every two months. Those who are uninsured or underinsured may be eligible for a patient assistance program to help with the cost of this service. Those interested in injectable PrEP can call or text 551-207-0386 or email LGBTQ@newbridgehealth.org.
