LGBTQ+ Health & Wellness Center

Be yourself. Be well.

All The Care You Need. When And Where You Need It.

The LGBTQ+ Health and Wellness Center at Bergen New Bridge Medical Center was designed to meet your needs. Whether you need gender-affirming hormone therapy, HIV care, PrEP, or an LGBTQ+ affirming provider who will make you feel welcome, we’re here for you.

Our program is by the community, for the community—we are designed and led by members of the LGBTQ+ community who have extensive professional experience in LGBTQ+ health and community program management. The design of the program is informed by both professional expertise and by our lived experiences of accessing gender-affirming care and other LGBTQ+ health services.

Access is important—We accept nearly every private insurance in New Jersey, plus Medicare and Medicaid. For uninsured patients, we can offer services through Charity Care. We also keep an eye on wait times for new patient visits and for returning patients to get in to see us, to ensure that you get to see your healthcare provider in a reasonable timeframe.

Primary Care: Everything You Need

At the LGBTQ+ Health and Wellness Center, we make sure you receive all the care you need. Your primary care provider will take an affirming and holistic approach to your overall health.

If your primary care needs include gender-affirming hormone care, PrEP, or sexual health care, we take care of that right here. We’ll ensure you get the proper preventive care screenings and address your other health and wellness needs. No question or concern is off-limits with us—we are here for you.

Read on for specifics about some of the services we offer:

Gender-Affirming Hormone Therapy

We use an informed consent approach to initiating gender-affirming hormone therapy. You’ll see your primary care provider for all the information you need to decide if hormone therapy is right for you and to have lab services before initiating hormone care. Medications are conveniently available on-site at the Bergen New Bridge Pharmacy.

Presurgical Exams and Testing

While we do not currently offer gender-affirming surgeries at BNBMC, we do offer presurgical exams and testing for those who need them prior to an upcoming scheduled gender-affirming surgery. Presurgical exams and testing are available for both new and established patients.

PrEP (Pre-exposure prophylaxis medication for HIV prevention)

We offer both the pill option and the new injectable option for HIV prevention.

PrEP pills can be taken daily, or using the “on-demand” dosing, in which you take the pills based on when you plan to be sexually active—your provider can explain more about this option. With our integrated lab services, in most cases, we can initiate your prescription for PrEP pills on the same day as your visit.

The PrEP injectable is a new option, in which you receive an injection every two months—no need to remember to take a pill. Your provider can help you decide if this option is right for you.

Sexual Health

We offer comprehensive sexual health screenings tailored to your needs and concerns. In addition to offering urine tests and blood tests, we are able to offer three-site swab tests for additional peace of mind. Your STI test results will be available quickly—sometimes on the same day. We also provide vaccines for infections that can be transmitted sexually, like mpox, hepatitis A and B, human papillomavirus (HPV), and meningitis.

Preventive Care Screenings

We understand that everyone has different preventive care needs and that some people have body parts that might not align with their gender identity. Your provider will help you determine what preventive care suits your needs and can provide this care or help you navigate trusted referrals if needed.

Take a look at our educational brochure, Preventive Care for Every Body, to learn more about which screenings may be right for you.

General Primary Care

While sometimes LGBTQ+ health is seen as specific services (such as gender-affirming hormone care or sexual health care), we emphasize caring for the whole person, and we believe any individual who identifies as LGBTQ+ might benefit from seeing an LGBTQ+ affirming primary care provider. We have a strong focus on preventive care and wellness, as we seek to close disparities in preventive services and chronic conditions that impact the LGBTQ+ community. We also address the health needs of LGBTQ+ community members who are aging.
