Philip E. George, MD, is a highly skilled surgeon specializing in abdominal wall, advanced gastrointestinal, and minimally invasive surgery. He currently serves as an assistant professor of surgery at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons and practices at Columbia University Medical Center, where he is part of the Columbia Hernia Center.

Dr. George earned his medical degree from George Washington University as part of a combined BS/MD track. He completed his general surgery residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He further specialized with a fellowship in advanced GI and minimally invasive surgery at Anne Arundel Medical Center. With a passion for patient-centered care, Dr. George brings extensive expertise in both academic and clinical settings.

Dr. George specializes in the treatment of hernia disease, ranging from small belly button hernias to massive recurrent incisional hernias. He also specializes in robotic abdominal wall reconstruction and hernia surgery, which decreases complications and hospital stays compared to open approaches. Dr. George is also an expert in sports hernia and mesh-free groin and abdominal wall repairs. He lectures at the local, national and international level on topics related to advances in hernia surgery and care.
