Psychiatric Nurse Externship Program
June 3rd to August 9th
Summer Externship
This full-time paid summer program is designed for nursing students who have completed a Fundamentals in Nursing Course. During the three-week orientation, there will be classes and supervised clinicals in various psychiatric areas as a Mental Health Assistant. The formal class days will cover crisis intervention, psychopharmacology, diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric illnesses and working as a team member. The orientation is held on weekdays from 7am -3:30pm. Upon completion of the orientation, the externs will assume a full-time schedule, including weekends and flexible shift scheduling. Externs must work a minimum of 32 hours per week.
Target Audience: Nursing Students who have completed their Fundamentals in Nursing course

Rotations will include:
- Child and Adolescent Crisis Intervention Unit
- Acute Psychiatric Unit
- Depression and Self-Injury Prevention Unit
- Addiction Rehabilitation Unit
- Involuntary Treatment Unit
- Psychiatric Emergency Department
Training will include:
- Crisis Intervention
- Assessing the Psychiatric Patient
- Managing the Psychiatric Patient
- Dementia Management and Abuse Prevention
- Psychopharmacology and Treatment Modalities
Criteria:
- Currently enrolled in a nursing program and completed a "Fundamentals in Nursing" course satisfactorily.
- AHA BLS certification
