Our Corporate Compliance Program

A Message from Chief Compliance Officer Barbara Piascik

Bergen New Bridge Medical Center is dedicated to upholding its business integrity and ethical conduct as a participant in healthcare programs funded by Federal and State governments. The care we deliver must follow all laws and regulations related to healthcare programs and all Federal, State, and local laws and regulations governing our operations.

It is the responsibility of every Bergen New Bridge employee, affiliated providers, contractors, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to proactively identify and report potential fraud and abuse and comply with the Medical Center’s policies and procedures designed to minimize fraud.

Ensuring compliance is challenging because the regulatory requirements governing reimbursement are complex and frequently change. To underscore and enhance Bergen New Bridge’s continued pledge of compliance and assist all staff in this area, we are committed to a comprehensive Compliance Program. We follow all of the directives defined in the Office of Inspector General’s Compliance Program Guidances for hospitals and long term care to prevent and detect potential violations of law. The adoption and implementation of our Compliance Program guide us in preventing and identifying potential fraud, abuse and waste, and maintaining compliance with all State, Federal, and local laws and regulations. At the same time, the Compliance Program supports the fundamental mission of the Medical Center: “Enhancing community health and well-being by providing high-quality, compassionate care that is accessible to those in need.”

The Compliance Department continuously monitors activity to ensure the Medical Center remains compliant. Further, we perform the following the advance our Compliance Program:

  • Conduct annual employee education on compliance and patient privacy as outlined by Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and fiscal responsibility.
  • Provide guidance on implementation and adherence to Medical Center policies and procedures.
  • Oversees document retention and destruction.
  • Oversees calls to the Corporate Compliance Hotline.
  • Monitors patient concerns and ensures compliance with guidelines for managing and addressing patient grievances.
